Chinese Yuan Green Glazed Buddhist Jar
 
Rare Chinese green glazed pottery jar with cover, certified as Yuan Dynasty, circa 1280–1368, Yunnan Province, China.
This lidded jar is made of terracotta and covered with a rich green glaze, showing natural variations, surface texture and age-related glaze wear. The body and cover are decorated with moulded relief motifs, including stylised Buddhist symbols and leaf-like panels, typical of ritual or offering vessels associated with Yunnan ceramic production.
The piece is accompanied by a French certificate from Jean-Louis Remond, Les 2 Empires, Antiquités Asiatiques, Le Havre, dated 2 March 2010. The certificate describes the object as a large lidded jar in terracotta with green glaze and moulded decoration representing Buddhist symbols, Yuan period, Yunnan Province, China.
This type of vessel is often described as a Buddhist offering jar or spirit jar. Such pieces were connected with ritual use and are appreciated today for their sculptural form, irregular handmade character, ancient glaze surface and historical presence.
