Alfred Hubert Watercolour – Le Marchand De Charbon
 
Beautiful 19th-century Belgian watercolour attributed to Alfred Hubert (Liège 1830 – Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Brussels 1902), titled “Le Marchand De Charbon”.
The composition depicts a coal merchant travelling along a rural path with three horses, rendered with great delicacy and movement. Hubert’s strong sense of draughtsmanship is visible in the treatment of the horses, the path and the atmospheric sky, while the soft watercolour tones give the work a poetic and historical character.
The piece is signed with the artist’s “AH” monogram in the lower right corner and bears a small title plaque on the frame reading “A. Hubert – Le marchand de charbon.”
An important detail is the old label on the reverse, marked “Exposition Historique De L’Art Belge”, listing the title of the work as “Le Marchand De Charbon” and the author as “Hubert Alfred.” This label adds a strong historical and provenance interest to the piece.
