Pair of 19th-Century Celadon Porcelain Lamps with Gagneau Bronze Mounts
An elegant pair of French antique oil lamps, later converted to electricity, featuring pale green celadon porcelain bodies, delicate white floral relief decoration, finely detailed gilt-bronze mounts, and beautifully shaped frosted glass shades.
The decorative metal fittings bear the impressed maker's plaque “GAGNEAU – 115 R. LAFAYETTE”, identifying the renowned Parisian lighting manufacturer Maison Gagneau.
Established in Paris in 1800, Maison Gagneau became recognised throughout the 19th century for its refined bronze lighting, oil lamps, chandeliers, and other decorative lighting fixtures.
The lamps are characteristic of late 19th-century French decorative taste, combining delicate celadon-green porcelain with classical Louis XVI-style gilt-bronze mounts.
Each lamp features a graceful baluster-shaped porcelain body with slightly raised white floral decoration. The lower section rests on an ornate metal base, while the upper fitting supports a flared frosted glass shade featuring transparent cut-style decorative details and a scalloped rim.
Originally designed as oil lamps, the pair has subsequently been adapted for electric lighting.
The combination of historical French lighting craftsmanship, subtle celadon colouring, and decorative glasswork makes this pair particularly suitable for elegant classical interiors.
